Welcome to the Xplora newsletter!

This Xplora newsletter is dedicated to U4energy, the European school challenge on energy education. U4energy provides teachers and schools ideas and materials how to promote energy awareness in classrooms and improve the energy education. Besides U4energy, Xplora brings you various other science education projects, resources and events.

Register now for the latest ITEMS Teacher Training Course on climate change
In November 2010 ITEMS (Improving Teacher Education in Maths and Science) is organising an online training course for teachers entitled “Climate change and sustainability”. This course will present teaching/learning materials for use in classes on issues surrounding climate change and sustainability with students aged 12-16. These materials have been developed using Moodle and participants can re-use the ready-made courses in their own teaching.

Mission X: Train Like an Astronaut
Mission X: Train Like an Astronaut is an international educational challenge to be launched in January 2011 focusing on fitness and nutrition as it encourages students to "train like an astronaut." Students will learn principles of healthy eating and exercise, and get excited about the world's future in space and the educational possibilities for their own future.

Take part in the CPAN competition on scientific outreach
The Spanish National Centre of Particle, Astroparticle and Nuclear Physics (Centro Nacional de Física de Partículas, Astropartículas y Nuclear - CPAN) has opened its first competition on scientific outreach. The competition aims to stimulate the production of informative material aimed at the general public, as well as high school and university students, on the principles and the scientific and technological advances made in the areas covered by the CPAN (particle, astroparticle and nuclear physics).

2WAYS Final Events

The 2WAYS final events consist of the first Young Europeans Science Parliament, where representative pupils from 29 cities and 17 countries will discuss hot and controversial issues in the life sciences; and of show of presentations, where visitors can learn about and discuss the most recent findings of European research in the fields of the life sciences. In the Final Ceremony the results of the 2WAYS - Communicating Life Science Research will be presented.

CinemaScience

Using film as a tool to popularise science, the CinemaScience film festival will present comedies, dramas, thrillers and science fiction films, but also lectures and science documentaries about topics ranging from space exploration to genetics, sociology or mathematics. Each screening is followed by a discussion between the public, members of the cast and crew and scientists.

2011 Millennium Youth Camp

Young people play a key role in finding solutions to the global challenges of the future. The objective of the International Millennium Youth Camp (MY Camp) is to find young people who are interested in mathematics, science and technology, and help them to start a career in these fields.

European Space Camp 2011
26 June – 4 July 2011
Andenes, Norway

The Norwegian Association of Young scientists invites young people (aged 17 to 21) interested in space and science and with a background in physics and mathematics to apply for the European Space Camp. The registration is open from 15 January to 15 April 2011, and the participation is free of charge.
