GI-Knoppix: Software for science teaching
GI-Knoppix is a special edition of Knoppix, a version of Linux which does not need any installation and just runs directly from CDROM. This edition of GI-Knoppix is made for science teaching. It is a free software collection to use both at school and at home.
As the software bases on freely distributable software, the teacher can use and distribute it freely to his pupils and to colleagues in the school network. No installation is needed, so there is no restriction in using directly the CDROM during the lessons. The only requirement is a PC with any x86 CPU and a CDROM drive.
What is on the GI-Knoppix CDROM?
On the CDROM you will find the following programs:
Office applications -OpenOffice.Org, all needed tools to work with documents from the Microsoft world. -LyX, for scientific writing. -Scribus, a DeskTop Publishing Program (DTP)
Graphics -GIMP, for image manipulation. -Xfig, vector drawing program with a lot of technical templates for drawing experimental setting out. -GQview, image viewer and archiver. -Several viewers of Postscript and PDF files. Mathematical applications: -MuPAD, a Computer Algebra System. Please note that this program has special license conditions. Physic applications: -Xmgrace, a data analysis program. -Kstars, an astronomy programs. It presents exceptional photos of Messier objects -Xephem, another astronomy programs. Computer science applications: -Umbrello, as Unified Modeling language (UML) Design Tool -Quanta, a web page editor -Programming languages, like as JAVA, PHP, Basic, Pascal, C/C++.
