Living in space: New educational material from the European Space Agency

The European Space Agency (ESA) has published new educational material on the theme of Living on the International Space Station (ISS). The material is related to a live in-flight call, which was organised as part of education activities related to the OasISS mission of ESA astronaut Frank De Winne.

During the call, De Winne performed demonstrations on the properties of water in space. At the same time, 300 Belgian school children carried out hands on activities related to space in an event organised by UNICEF Belgium and the European Space Education Resource Office (ESERO) from ESA. Later in the day, the children watched De Winne’s demonstrations and compared their results, on the ground, with his results in space.

A recording and the lessons related to the water demonstrations “A drop of Water” are available on http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Lessons_online/SEMTEQXRA0G_0.html.

A series of short video clips on how astronauts live and work in the conditions of microgravity is available at http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Lessons_online/SEMF1FXRA0G_0.html.

The curricular related lessons are based on the following topics:

  • Personal Hygiene
  • Eating and Drinking on the ISS
  • Exercise and Fitness
