Science Lecture about plants by the Royal Institution

The school event, adressed to pupils from 7 to 9 years old, will be held in London on September 29 2005. Plants are absolutely necessary to our lives. They provide food, and we also use them to make clothes, buildings and many of the everyday objects in our houses.

All of the food and materials we get from plants come from chemicals that are made inside plants from carbon dioxide gas in the air. Learning about what happens inside plants when chemicals are being made is very important, because in the future we will need to use more chemicals from plants. Plant scientists want to persuade plants to become non-polluting ‘green factories’ that can supply all of the chemicals we need in the future.
