2008 GIFT Workshop: Carbon Cycle

The 6th edition of the GIFT (Geosciences Information for Teachers) workshop will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 13-15 April 2008 during the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union. The conference is a unique opportunity for teachers to meet scientist from all over the world.

The theme of this year’s workshop is “The Carbon Cycle”, providing latest scientific information on the carbon cycle in general and the diffusion of carbon compounds in the different reservoirs, like atmosphere, oceans, biomass, sediments and rocks.

Certainly, one focus will also be on carbon dioxide and how its emission can be reduced. Another important topic in this context is the acidification of the ocean.

The workshop program combines scientific presentations on current research by leading scientists participating to the EGU General Assembly, with hands-on activities presented by science educators that can be used by the teachers in their classrooms. Also, teachers are encouraged to give short presentations of special activities they have developed themselves. Participating teachers will also have an opportunity to attend the general assembly of the EGU, listen to scientific talks, view poster sessions and technical exhibitions.
