"Catch a Star" and win an astronomical competition!
"Catch a Star!" is the name of an international competition organised by ESO - the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere - and the European Association for Astronomy Education. Primary or secondary school pupils from all over the world are invited to take part in this contest which returns for its fifth year in 2007.
Categories This contest aims to encourage students to learn about astronomy, work together and discover things for themselves by researching information. The "Catch a Star!" competition is divided into three categories: Catch a Star Researchers, Catch a Star Adventurers and Catch a Star Artists.
- Catch a Star Researchers
Student teams are invited to write a report about an astronomical topic of their choice (e.g., a specific astronomical object, phenomenon, observation, scientific problem, theory, etc.) and discuss how telescopes such as the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT), the ALMA submillimetre/millimetre telescope or the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) could be used to make observations to provide new insights into their chosen theme.
- Catch a Star Adventurers
Pupils are asked to write a project about a chosen theme in astronomy or describe a school activity, such as the organization of an 'astronomy day' or observing camps for your class.
- Catch a Star Artists
Students are invited to make drawings, paintings or other piece of artwork with an astronomical subject.
For the three categories, the most important goal is to develop an interest in science and astronomy through investigation and teamwork. Reports should be written in English.
Who can enter the competition? This competition is open to students worldwide, who are still in primary or secondary school on 2 March 2007. - Catch a Star Researchers is open to groups of up to 3 students, plus one teacher. To be eligible for the travel prizes, teams must be from Europe or Chile, and all students must be at least 15 years old on 2 March 2007. - Catch a Star Adventurers and Catch a Star Artists are open to individuals or groups of students. Students may only enter one of the competitions.
