PROLEARN - Network of Excellence in Professional Learning

PROLEARN is a 'Network of Excellence' dealing with technology-enhanced professional learning. It intends to bring together the most important research groups in the area of professional learning and training, as well as other key organizations and industrial partners, thus bridging the current gap between research and education at universities and similar organizations, and training and continuous education that is provided for and within companies.

Project aims
PROLEARN goal is to achieve a greater focus on questions of European importance and a better integration of research efforts. Therefore PROLEARN will initiate and improve cooperation between various actors of academia and industry in the area of technology enhanced learning.
The project will particularly support international co-operation and will therefore form a new understanding of an open network within the research community.
Within the European context, PROLEARN is the only Network of Excellence focusing on “Professional Learning”. This international context means that not only regional or national needs will be considered, but also the larger picture from a combination of institutions in the individual countries. In this sense the opportunities for interaction offered by PROLEARN are not limited to regional or national partners but also include the international interested parties, so that a range of information can be accessed that goes far beyond individual, regional or national boundaries.

The Partners
The L3S Research Center is coordinating a consortium with PROLEARN of a total of 19 European partners, from such established institutions like the Open University in the UK, the Ariadne Foundation (Belgium), several institutes of the Fraunhofer Society, the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, the Helsinki University of Technology and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden.

The PROLEARN consortium comprises leading research institutes from various research areas necessary for advancing the state-of-the-art in professional learning. These leading research institutes cover the whole area of professional learning needed to address in detail the issues of Personalized Adaptive Learning; Learning Objects, metadata and Standards; interactive media; online experimentation; brokerage systems, LMS and delivery; business models, business processes and markets; Knowledge Work Management, and have the necessary background and experience to make the bold visions of the PROLEARN “Academy” and PROLEARN “Virtual Competence Centre” a reality.
The consortium brings together scientific and technological leaders in Europe from the fields of technology, education and economics offering the required expertise for the network.

PROLEARN is an open network and in continuously searching for new partnerships to complement its excellence and to increase contact with European industry. In principle two kinds of partnerships are offered:
• research partnerships;
• industry partnerships;

The PROLEARN  project will not only integrate the research activities of the consortium members, but will extend this integration to the whole European research area for technology-enhanced professional learning.

PROLEARN is a 48 month project and it started on January 2004. It is financed by the Information Society Technology - IST programme of the European Commission.
