Xfig – free program for drawing

Xfig is an easy to use vector drawing program with many features and easy to use. Karl Sarnow, pedagogical coordinator of Xplora, explains more about how it can be used in science teaching.

What makes it different from other drawing programs? Xfig is a vector drawing program, which is able to “import and export” a variety of formats.

Who might be interested in Xfig?
Teachers and students of science in secondary schools.

Where can I get it?
Either go direct to Xfig homepage or download the GI-Knoppix version from the Xplora website.

Can I give it to my pupils?
Yes, the program is published under a general public license (GPL). This means you can use and distribute the program as much as you like without paying for it or worrying about licenses.

Can I get a full description of the program before trying to use it? 
Yes, you can read the original documentation in English or some shorter texts both in French and in German.

We present some additional information (pdf) about the use and the characteristic of Xfig. You will find out about the navigation, the buttons, the icons and the drawing characteristics of the program. You will have also an example of practical use of the program for science teaching.
